Russian icons represent a form of religious art that developed in Eastern Orthodox Christianity after Kievan Rus’ adopted the faith from the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire in AD 988. Initially following Byzantine artistic standards, these icons were integral to religious practices and cultural traditions in Russia. Icons typically show calm, serene, solemn expressions because they reflect the inner stillness and being one/in communion with God.
This Icon shows Virgin Mary, the healer. The icon dates back to the 19th century and is made from richly embossed oklad in a vibrant rich gold with stunning adornments. I have not been able to find out the meaning of the written script at the bottom. The size of this truly extraordinairy and unique piece is w 22.4 x d 28 x 2 cm. It weighs 664 grms. Postage from France included.

What is Oklad:
Riza, or Oklad (Greek επένδυση) is a metal cover protecting an icon pierced to expose elements (typically faces and hands) of the underlying painting.
