Vintage French Cutlery 12 persons / 38 pieces
This beautiful set of vintage French Cutlery is for 12 persons and consists of 38 pieces. It is Silver plated and stamped with the French makers name of Boulenger. Each piece is adorned with scrolls and bands and engraved with the initials A J or J A. The set consists of the following pieces: 12 Dinner forks, L 21 cm, 12 Dinner spoons, L 21cm, 12 Dessert or Teaspoons, L 14cm, One Ladle, L 29.5cm and one Serving spoon, L 25.5cm. Why do vintage Cutlery sets often not include knives?
Cutlery sets were usually gifted for a wedding. To have knives included was considered bad luck, it would severe the marriage ties. Also, in the old days, knives were made by a ‘Cutler’ whereas a ‘Flatware maker’ created forks and spoons. This explains the absent of knives in many old cutlery sets and can boxed Knife sets, often with Bakelite or Corn handles be found and bought separately to complement any cutlery.
