This is a unique set of 4 antique shirt collars dating back to the early 1900’s. Vintage shirt collars were made from various materials depending on the era, ranging from stiff 100% cotton and heavy linen to laminated paper-cotton blends and chemical interfacings. My collars are in fine condition and sit in a rectangle striped box. The box is 33 x 12.5 x h 6cm and each collars ia around w 13 x d 11 x h 4 cm. The total weight of the box and 4 collars is 266 grms. I have seen some of these stacked under a glass dome, which looks terrific. Postage from France included.
History from the Early & Victorian Eras (19th to early 20th Century):
Cotton and Linen: Traditional detachable and fixed collars were crafted from tightly woven, high-count cotton or stiff linen.
Starch: These fabrics were heavily soaked in liquid laundry starch to achieve their signature board-like rigidity and height.
Linen and Cardboard: Mass-produced Victorian detachable collars laminated fine linen onto thick cardboard stock or paper composites (known as linene) to mimic high-end stiffness cheaply.
Celluloid and Rubber: Turn-of-the-century working-class or travel collars were sometimes made of waterproof celluloid (early plastic) or rubber, allowing them to be wiped clean rather than laundered.
